| SMI Design
SMI Design is the documentation support team for the SMI Group. It is
formed by a 13 strong team of experienced marine draftspeople and designers
that come from as far away as Brazil and the UK.
The team work with a number of software packages to meet the increasing
demands of SMI Group's successful manufacturing arm.
The SMI design team works closely with the ships designers, constantly liaising to ensure the owners vision transforms to reality.
SMI Design Processes
Once a general arrangement drawing is received from the shipyard, SMI begin the process of validating the general arrangement and structural interfaces.
Validation continues with the yards structural model and SMI begins to build a 3D model of the interior envelope checking for tolerance between the ships structures, services and the interior envelope.
SMI works closely with the yards acoustic and thermal engineers to ensure tolerances between structure and envelope allow enough space for the correct materials to be used in order to achieve the specification early in the build program.
With the general arrangement drawing, 3D models of the ships structure and the insulation details known as the design of the interior envelope can be completed. SMI is experienced in building interiors to class and flag particularly more than 500 GRT and pays particular attention whilst designing the interior envelope to using fire rated and certified materials.
3D parametric models are produced of the millwork or interior joinery to fit exactly inside the net space of the SMI interior envelope. The SMI design team coordinates with the systems engineers so the ships domestic systems are fully integrated with the interior. |
2D drawings are developed from the models and issued for construction. Cut files are developed for CNC machining. |
Work packs containing all relevant information for each manufacturing compartment are prepared and issued to the workshop. |
